Let me start by saying that I'm absolutely against black-friday... I work in retail supposedly and not only do I feel this phony pro consumerism-cattle drive is the complete opposite of what I want to be doing with my life energy but it also reflects poorly on the human existence to an end that rots the mind and soul with glutenous greed.
I'm in Southern California for the holiday at my wife's parents house and though it's nice to be around a functional and stimulating family I can't neglect my bike fitness; so I went for a ride today and explored the greater San Diego area. Gotta stay lean yo!
The ride started out somewhat to plan even though the map I was following a completely whacky. I made my way over to the coast (my photos just don't do justice for this area) to begin my quest along the ocean towards a coffee shop I had scouted on the inter-webs.
After making a few wrong turns I had to ask some locals where the hell I was and returned en route to my first destination. Caffe Calabria wasn't anything special to photograph or talk about - in an Italian accent they provided an espresso that was like someone who finishes too soon in bed; short - disappointing - leaving a bitter woody after taste in the mouth which hardly calls for seconds. Hey I could have been off kilter being at mile 40ish of my ride...?
Time to head back home I guess...? Shortly after returning to the saddle I passed a house front bike shop Mucho Mountain Bikes; this guy was a laid back - bad ass that had a lot of fresh gear in his small shop.
I asked him where I could find a decent pint of beer (without getting beat up by leather clad biker chicks for being dressed in Lycra) to quench my thirst as my brief stop at the last beverage establishment had left something to be desired. He pointed me up the street to The Blind Lady Ale House and the trip was well worth it.
Simply put they know how to do it. I got a discount just for riding my damn bike!! WTF!! You're gonna give me a Bicycle Appreciation discount?? I shed a tear and filled up on gut fuel de amber ale. Many thanks...
I live in the wrong state it seems...
I had been away from home for roughly four hours so it seemed fitting to head back to the homestead.
After taking a few more wrong turns and calibrating my compass I got on track when my phone died!? I tried memorizing the roads and turns I needed to take but it was more then twenty miles and I'll admit I couldn't remember shit. I had road maybe ten miles when I busted into a coffee shop somewhere way off course and asked to use the internet. I wrote down some chicken scratch directions and made my way out.
Daylight was fading and it was all up hill so I knew I'd be caught out in the dark without lights. Dressed in all black on a black bike I just kept my head down in the wind and kept the cadence high; the distance was nothing to fear it was those four wheeled-mach 1 monsters I kept looking over my shoulder for.
Feeling a tad sedated after six hours in the saddle I found the last turn on my hand-written map and blitzed the home stretch. There is euphoric feeling I tend to get when I'm calorie deficient and working hard; I call it The Magic Carpet... It's a tingly floating feeling that makes hard efforts seem like nothing and reality starts to blur a bit. I made it home feeling pretty good considering and craving another tasty beverage.. I decided to reward myself so I spinned over to the local market and picked up what seems to be the best beer I've ever had. Stone - Self Righteous Ale.
Again - it seems I live in the wrong state, though I think this can be mitigated with some old fashioned boot legging.
See you later space cowboy
Frugal Dementia?
To the out of tune eye I might look like a salesmen... well actually I'm a bicycle enthusiast.
I'll help you any way I can to open a door to freedom and adventure, the childlike fun that a bike most certainly is. Hey you don't need to see it my way.. in fact I'd prefer you find your own. Just hop on and turn the pedals.. whatever comes next is up to you.
Come on ya'll, it's giving half a crap about life!! - you are what you eat - and - you reap what you sow - (so I'm told) your actions affect everything around you.. I wish for a pair of goggles to put on: they'll open your eyes to whats is in front of you and how the outcome is affected by choice A. vs choice B. and so on. An impartial view of how you or may not eff! the whole world over by choosing the blue pill.. Yea life is about "making mistakes" and drawing outside of the lines but hey man you're wrecking other peoples fun and it's time to recalibrate your techniques..
Let me digress..
People blow my mind when they're decisions are so heavily governed by saving a damn dollar!! I understand there's a time and a place to spend your hard earned and limited cash supply but you gotta draw the line when you're driving your mini-van 20 minutes the wrong way to save $2 on a pair of gloves!!?? OPEN YOUR EYES!!
I'd like a big cartoon sized hand to slap em with.. 'Repent for your sins and change your life!'
But for now I'll just grin and nod my head: yes sir, thank you sir - because people haven't figured out that the customer isn't always right..
Anyways.
First post huh..?
I'll get the hang of it here soon.
Until then it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
Cheers
